Reading excerpts of my books aloud to an audience yesterday made me realise something: they may not be great literature but they are well-written good stories.
It was a pleasant surprise. Sometimes I get so wound up in promoting or writing I don't have time to stop and appreciate the value of what I'm doing. Very satisfying. And it makes me all the keener to do my very best to increase their share of the market.
It is daunting reading on Twitter or FaceBook all the 5* reviews that books get, and all the authors out there who are making it in the writing world. I assume they're better than me but I have to keep telling myself that's not necessarily true.
I haven't read my books aloud for a long time and it does make a difference. Try it with yours, see how it sounds.
